This Week in the World

Yeah-but-you and the dems do it too

It's a distraction tactic we saw a lot of last week, and one that derails attempts to hold anyone accountable. Read about it on my blog.

Feedback request: Book title

I'd like your feedback on my next book title. It's:

SpeakStrong
Say What You Mean
Mean What You Say
Don’t Be Mean When You Say It

Someone suggested that it was too much to have it in four sentences, each of which are directives.

What do you think?

Feedback request: Blog design

I'd like your feedback on my new blog design. Any suggestions? Let me know. Thanks.

QuickBooks - 1 shopping cart discussion

My bookkeeper and I have been struggling to integrate our 1shopping cart with our QuickBooks accounting program. It’s been a long discovery journey and I want to share the results for three reasons:
1) Save those of you who use these from the nightmares we experienced
2) Provide a forum in case there are some fixes we haven’t heard about and to,
3) Encourage the users to encourage the vendors to make these programs more compatible.

If you use these programs, please check out the info we've assembled and add to the discussion. Thanks.

Action needed

Do you like our new blog design? Blog coach Shonnie Lavender has been helping me upgrade it.

There were a few times when Shonnie needed a quick response to an email in order to continue her work.

She used an email subject line that said -

  • Action needed…

and another that said -

  • Reply needed.

Inform people when you are sending requests you need them to act on.

  • FYI

in a subject line let’s people know you are not waiting for an action from them.

BTW, my article about how to write strong email subject lines is one of the most popular ones in my article list.

Poison Phrase of the Week

Get a little closer to the camera

You wouldn’t think this would still happen in 2007, but it does. On the, August 10th episode of Hardball, Chris Matthews interrupted Erin Burnett during an interview to ask,

- MATTHEWS: Could you get a little closer to the camera?

BURNETT: What is it? Is it (garbled) in strangely?

MATTHEWS: Come in closer…no…come in…come in further…come in closer…really close.

(Burnett leans towards camera.)

BURNETT: What are you, what are you doing?

MATTHEWS: Haw. Haw. Just kidding. You look great. Anyway, thank… Erin it’s great to have…look at that look… You’re great…

BURNETT: I don’t even know. I’m going to have to go look at the tape here. I’m in a strange location.

MATTHEWS (laughing): No, you’re beautiful. I’m just kidding. I’m just kidding. You’re a knockout.

Why should I be surprised? With all the discussion of what women in politics are wearing, I suppose I shouldn’t be…but I am.

I concede, I occasionally hear complaints like this from women who (may or) may not realize how they appear to invite it. (In those cases, dress code should be addressed.) But in all cases, this kind of personal comment is inappropriate and undermines the professionalism of women.

Important book - reflections from a former colleague

Last night I was thinking about old friends and colleagues who had disappeared and later contacted me. I then went to check my email and lo and behold - there was an email in my inbox from someone I once worked with. If it had just been a hello I would have been thrilled. It was more than that - I was delighted.

Kati mentions the effect PowerPhrases had on her, so even though there isn’t a specific story, I decided to share what she said as a success story. Thanks Kati.

I have personally been responsible for the sale of many thousands of your book, PowerPhrases, in Australia.

Now that I am about to embark on my own training, I want to be able to offer your books directly. Please tell me how we might be able to do that.

I love PowerPhrases & tell my Skillpath customers (and anyone else I talk to – I gave 5 copies away for Xmas gifts myself last year) the following:

*      It’s the most important book to come out since 1936 (How to win friends & influence people)

*      It’s the most important book for improving communication & every adult who wants to succeed needs to have it & use it

*      Changed my life – gave me words to say when before I wouldn’t have known how to handle awkward situations

*      People used to be able to run over me with a steam roller, but with PowerPhrases, it doesn’t happen now

How’s that for press? And I mean it, too. I even recognize a couple of things I might have passed along to you. Thank you. I’m proud to be a part of something so important.

I’m blown away. It’s comments like this one that keep me writing.

Kati never struck me as a lightweight - so I was particularly surprised to hear about her “before and after” reports.

Thanks Kati - and for those of you who are interested in bulk purchases, the discount schedule is available here: http://www.speakstrong.com/store/qty_discounts.html
