Walk in My Generationís Shoes:
Intergenerational Communication Skills in the Workplace Workshop

Ask the ones who know
If you want to know how to communicate with someone in a different generation, ask someone in that generation. And when they answer, pay attention to what they deliberately say, what slips out of their mouths, and how they speak.

Thatís what we do in my Walk in My Generationís Shoes training sessions. I provide general generational information, break my groups into generational subgroups and provide a tested series of questions to get the dialogue going. What results is profound, authentic and transformational dialogue. Overt and hidden attitudes are exposed and managed followed with clear ideas about how to bridge the communication gap between coworkers of different generations.

Many companies invest hundreds of thousands of dollars keeping their younger generation workers happy. But if the underlying challenge is that the generations arenít communicating, those investments will fall short of their intentions. Walk in My Generationís Shoes bridges that gap and lets each generation benefit from the strengths of other generations.

For sneak peeks of the kind of information that emerges from this work, read my article: You Donít Call Me ďOldĒ and I Donít Call you ďKidĒ - Intergenerational communication in the workforce

Intended audiences : All staff levels including senior management

The Six Keys to Compelling Communication:
How to Use PowerPhrases® to Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say - Without Being Mean When You Say It

You already know that it's not what you say, but it's how you say it that matters. Master communicators can make ordinary ideas sound extraordinary, while ineffective communicators can make extraordinary ideas sound routine. This workshop provides organizational leaders and their general workforce a clear, direct and ultimately compelling approach to communication that is clear, concise and effective.

Intended audiences : All Levels

SpeakStrong and the Sunny Side of Conflict:
How to stop arguing and start communicating

Stop wrestling through conflict as combative adversaries when you can work through conflict as cooperative allies. This seminar will provide the clarity you need to see the opportunity inherent in conflict. This workshop shows why opportunitynowhere really means opportunity now here. From overcoming instinctive reaction to conflict, to clarifying issues, to using the points of disagreement as a framework of resolutions, Corrective Conflict Lenses gives you the tools to get to the root and resolution of conflicts and to discover the sunny side of conflict.

Intended audiences: All Levels

From You v. Me to We:
How to Relate to Your Communication Opposite as Your Communication Compliment

What's wrong with these people? You both may speak English, but still be speaking a different language. This lively workshop is based on the Communication Style Inventory designed by Meryl Runion. It takes participants through a series of questions to determine their style of speaking, and highlights their communication strengths and weaknesses. It tells them what PowerPhrases they need to use more often, and what Poison Phrases they need to avoid. It then details the dynamics between styles and suggests commitments, codes, signals and Power Phrases to apply to bridge the gap between styles. It's a very fun session, but what's most fun of all is the fact that it moves you from judging to appreciating. How cool is that?

Intended audiences: All Levels

Playing from the Same Game Book:
How and Why to Set and Follow Standards of Responsible Communication

Well-planned communication strategies work. Manipulative communication tactics backfire . Managers and employees need to know the difference. This seminar makes this differentiation and details the importance of setting and following standards of responsible communication. Playing from the Same Game Book provides concrete and specific guidelines for establishing communication standards, and then walks the participants through the process of creating communication standards for their organizations, departments and teams. It provides the information needed to create buy-in, making the communication standards practical tools for clarity, consistency, candor, civility and reliability.

Intended audiences: All Levels

The SpeakStrong Supervisor:
Perfect Phrases for Every Management Situation

Employees need supervisors to lead or get out of their way. Based on Meryl Runion's McGraw Hill book Perfect Phrases for Managers and Supervisors, The SpeakStrong Supervisor trains managers in the management process by providing words to use in hundreds of common management situations. Management training has never been this practical or this fun before. The book Perfect Phrases for Managers and Supervisors is the workbook for this workshop.

Intended audiences: Professionals, managers and supervisors

The Totally Integrated Performance System:
How to Manage Seamlessly

To get the best possible results from employees, managers must employ a system where every aspect of management is integrated. The Totally Integrated Performance System (TIPS) is a simple and powerful performance management system with five distinct processes consisting of: goal clarification and alignment, consistent performance tracking, regularly scheduled manager-employee conferences, performance improvement plan to address performance problems and integrated performance reviews.

This easy to master and eminently useful system is designed to help supervisors enable their employees to perform their best work. This seminar or workshop provides the understanding you need to implement the system and the words to use in its execution.

Creating Corporate, Community and Individual Cultures Where Truth Is Championed

Sure, hindsight may be 20-20 - but that is no comfort for an organization that has just made a costly mistake. Every day, poor business decisions go unchallenged by subordinates who don't agree but are afraid to speak up, or employees look the other way from illegal or unethical activities. All too frequently, offhand comments by CEOs are turned into de facto policy by overeager managers. There is the problem of leaders themselves who recognize problems and do not initiate the difficult conversations necessary to address them. This challenging and provocative workshop for senior-level staffers breaks down the barriers of hierarchical communication. The real-world anecdotes and exercises are designed to overcome an environment that discourages forthright communication. Leaders will be challenged to tap into the insight and expertise of all staff members to make well-informed internal and external business decisions.

Intended audiences: Senior Executives, managers and policymakers

"Meryl Runion has been working with the BellSouth Wholesale Operations Department teaching a course in How to Become a Better Communicator. Her teaching skills are excellent, and we have received nothing but rave reviews about her style and approach to the course content.

Our students are all members of management, and they attend class on their own time after normal working hours. To be able to say that this time spent away from their home and families is “value added” is a testament to Meryl’s skill at presenting and her knowledge of her subject.

We first offered the course to fifty managers in Birmingham, AL and when we opened registration in Atlanta, GA – the class roster of 60 filled up within a couple of hours. The folks here had already heard how powerful the information was and how much it could impact their daily lives. We had so many people on the waiting list that we offered it a second time in Atlanta (we have never held a class more than once!) and it again immediately filled all available seats. The third city we taught in - Jacksonville, FL - was taught at our Orange Park center and was again a hit!

It has been a pleasure working with Meryl, and I would heartily recommend her to instruct any program that involved communications techniques. Her skill at Power Communications has helped make our BellSouth managers much more effective in their day-to-day interpersonal skills."

~ Margo Timberlake, Bell South

"All day long I heard attendees echoing your message."
~ Sharon Campbell, Better Hearing Colorado

"The feedback from those attending was overwhelmingly positive. The combination of your knowledge of the dynamics of interpersonal communicaton and your engaging style made for a highly valuable training session. We walked away with practical ideas for communicating more effectively with others, both at work and away from work."
~ Paul Anderson, Current Inc.

"You know that you have made an impact when several years have passed and employees who attended the seminar can still recall, “Say what you mean, mean what you say, without being mean about it.” Wow! Not many public speakers/instructors have been known to leave such a profound impression."
~ Sandy Engle, Colorado Plains Medical Center

Meryl Runion, CSP

"Her skill at Power Communications has helped make our employees much more effective in their day-to-day interpersonal skills."

~ Georgia Puls, Iowa Mutual

"Nothing but praise for you and your message."
~ Elizabeth Isbell Clarb

"You are fabulous! Not one disappointed attendee in your sessions. Do you know how rare that is?"
~ Susan D. Forrester, Central California Women’s Conference
