Tom sensed defensiveness from Michael when he expressed an opposing opinion. He told him,
- I’m not trying to antagonize you. I’m trying to get to the core of this discussion.
When people get defensive, they often think they you have a negative motive. If you explain your motive, they are less likely to resist your words.
