June 7, 2006I Can’t help It, I Was Raised This Way

Filed under: Poison Phrase of the Week by merylrunion |

Like everyone else, there were some flaws in my upbringing. Like everyone else, there are some things that I learned from my wonderful but less than perfect parents that I need to unlearn. I find it useful to look at childhood lessons to increase awareness, but it is not useful to consider the limits of your upbringing to be a life sentence. If you say,

- I can’t help it. I was raised that way

To justify not speaking up (I’ve heard it) you are making an excuse. In that case my message is to

Stop making excuses and do something about it.

  1. I learned this lesson as a child. While visiting my elderly grandfather who lived alone (my grandmother had died), I noticed that the bathroom was not clean and did not want to use it. When I mentioned it to my father, he said: “Clean it”. I got the point immediately: ‘Don’t complain about something if you are not willing to do something about it.’ Needless to say, I cleaned the bathroom.
I draw on this lesson very often and have found that it has taken me far. Precious time is not wasted in a negative mode and I accomplish a lot by taking the initiative to do something when I can, while I can. My sleep at night is restful knowing I have done what I should have done.

  2. In my haste to leave the office for vacation, I submitted this under the wrong topic. It was meant to go under the topic for “not complaining.”
