November 2, 2006Making Some Changes
Note: I originally wrote the Poison Phrase of the Week based on an article that caught my attention. Only after I had written it did I realize the article was satire. What does that say about the news these days? Hmm.
Stacey has an outgoing voicemail that says,
- Please leave a message at the sound of the beep. Please know that I’m making some changes. If you don’t hear back from me, know that you’re one of those changes.
Can you imagine getting that voicemail?

Wow, that phone message is very cruel and to what purpose does it serve. None that I can think of…it’s not funny or witty and would make the caller feel awkward and hurt. I hope this isn’t her voice mail at work!!

I would be interested to hear your alternative suggestions.
This outgoing voicemail is blunt, however, I sense a bit of Truth in it as well.

I can imagine it because I have been the recipient of many such inappropriate voice mail messages. I get the irony, the “cleverness.” I can even appreciate it on a certain level. But I’m sure the person did not think about all the possibilities of people who might call her when she recorded that voice mail. The impulse to demonstrate one’s cleverness in voice mail messages seems to be something of a trend, if not an epidemic. If we all knew – could really experience – how our “cleverness” affects others, I’m sure it would curb the impulse a little. Most of us are not intentionally mean, but we forget to consider unknown others as much as we should. This practice is very akin to bumber stickers I think. “If you don’t like the way I drive, then get off the sidewalk.” has always been one that bothers me. I get the irony. I may have even laughed at it when I was younger. But the sentiment – the separation – it conveys to our fellow beings is sad and frightening all at the same time.

That comment will stab her in the foot especially if her boss hears the voicemail and she forgets to respond in a timely manner. What’s that saying, “Pride goes before the Fall?”
