January 11, 2007I Thought You Were the Desk Clerk

Filed under: Poison Phrase of the Week by merylrunion |

When the desk clerk told Jim that he would have to ask her manager about special room rates in the morning because she normally handled that, Jim responded to the desk clerk in a cutting tone with the words,

- Oh, excuse me. I thought you were the desk clerk.

Sarcasm is hurtful and unhelpful.

  1. Sarcasm IS hurtful and unhelpful. I hope the desk clerk used a power phrase like this: “I am the desk clerk. My manager likes to handle these special rates requests personally and she has asked that I ask guests to check with her in the morning.”

  2. Great suggestion, Iris. That’s exactly the kind of response I would have recommended…if I had thought of it…and next time I’ll be more likely to think of it.
