April 26, 2007Dance Class
Meryl,
How do I get the attention of my dance class between dances? They’re focused on each other and don’t want to focus on me.
Meryl Responds
Say,
If you enjoyed that dance, clap once. If you want to learn how to do that dance even better, clap twice.
The ones that hear you will get the attention of the rest of the group.

Having been a dance teacher myself many years ago, I used this trick. I used to simply stand at the front of the room and say nothing (and stop the music, as well). Eventually, students noticed the “silence” — which spoke far louder than anything I could have said. All it took was a couple of times doing this for it to eventually become “habit” (the habit being that once the dance run-through was completed, they didn’t congregate into micro-conversations and awaited further instruction from me).
Hope this helps!
