January 25, 2008Power Phrase: Can it wait?

Filed under: The PowerPhrase of the Week by merylrunion |

Carla has found that the question:

  • Can it wait?

works wonders for getting people to not interrupt her for minor issues when she’s under deadline on major ones. Usually it can. If it can’t, they tell her so and she takes care of it.

  1. My thought is that “can it wait?” is a bit too short/abrupt. Since I don’t have the best people skills I am always attentive to your suggestions. Perhaps adding how to stance yourself or suggesting that you hear what is being asked completely before nodding in agreement & then commenting “can it wait.”

  2. I find myself asking, “When do you need this?” I hope to show that I am willing to help and having their deadline (and maybe other helpful information)will help me include their additional task in my schedule.
