March 10, 2008Ask Meryl ~ Asking for a raise

Filed under: Ask Meryl by merylrunion |

Meryl,

What is the best way to request a promotion following a favorable review?

Meryl responds,

The best way is to translate all the good you do into dollars and cents in a way that makes what you’re asking for sound like a pittance. Your efficiency, the disasters you prevented, the ways you saved money with measures like recycling etc. (My postmistress and I were talking about how she turned out all the lights in the area of the post office she wasn’t in to save $. She could translate that into justification for a raise.)

Then be specific about what you want. And don’t be shy. It’s rare for anyone to lose a job for asking for “too much money.” You can always back down. Up is harder.
