March 17, 2008This Week in the World ~ Don’t take my swear words away
McKay Hatch doesn’t enjoy cussing, and he limits his friends to those who don’t. He even started a no-cuss club at school and gained 50 members. Now he has an online no-cuss club with over 10,000 members. Recently his town sponsored a no-cussing week.
Any time someone speaks up for communication standards, I rejoice.
The story has a sad part. As a result of his efforts, this fourteen-year old boy received a barrage of angry swearing emails and even pornography. It’s difficult to imagine anyone advocating cussing, but many people did.
If you stand up for what’s right, people who like things the way they are might make you a target. I applaud McKay for not letting the aggression silence him.

I read your article about McKay Hatch with interest. I don’t object to the occasional swear word, such as when I stubbed the same toe on the same corner of the same table THREE TIMES in one afternoon. Still, I find the extent to which some people use them coarse and vulgar.
Unfortunately, there are always people who enjoy tearing down others. I imagine many who sent the young man filthy emails did so “for kicks” and not out of any real malice. These are the people who have nothing more meaningful to do with their time than string toilet paper in trees or ring doorbells before running away.
Sad, really. Especially when you realize these are also the people who be ringing doorbells and tottering away on their canes and walkers when they are in their eighties.

Cussing (called cursing where I live) is a symptom of poor communication and a lazy way to express your views. To wallow in times gone by and see for yourself how fantastic, witty and powerful communicating without the inclusion of swear words, watch some good old black and white movies! the dialogue is genius (think casablanca) the characters are strong opinionated and really get the message across with assertion, measured tone and good use of the english language! Some of the one liners are inspired and say exactly what needs to be said without offence.

I found some interesting words the other day. If someone with a beam of light is talking about your dim light dont take the bait. I am understanding the person I need to change is me and I respect others having the freedom of being who they are. I am not obligated to be around people when they want to use foul language I have the freedom to leave. If I must listen I understand I need to get to the business at hand immediately and remove myself from an uncomfortable position. I understand this is real direct. Heroes are in graves. We need to be mindful we are not an island and out numbered when it comes to people who really want to shape their character and we need to know which fight to fight, how to fight it without losing all we have work for.
