April 10, 2008PowerPhrase ~ If I don’t hear back from you by… I’ll call you
People get busy, so if you are depending on someone for something, it’s good to maintain some control of the communication. That’s why it’s often prudent to maintain some control in the next point of contact. A good way to do that is to say,
- If I don’t hear back from you by…I’ll call you.

Funny I just got off the phone before reading this email and those were my last words on the phone call. This does work well and it leaves the ball in your court. In sales this is very important!

I use variations on this when communicating with co-workers about their PC issues. There are times when you apply a fix but you won’t know if it really fixed the issue for a day or so. In those cases, I tell people, “If the issue recurs before the end of day on Day X, call or email me. If I don’t hear from you by Day X, I will assume everything is okay.”
