April 16, 2009Poison Phrase ~ And Your Point is…?
Sure, it’s frustrating when people ramble without getting to the point. You need to focus people at times. Just don’t do it by saying,
- And your point is?
Get them thinking linearly instead by saying something like,
-
- Can you tell me three things you want me to do?
- What’s your first priority here?
- Can you summarize your most important point in a three or four sentences?
What phrases do you use?

I need an idea on how to stop rambling in more personal type conversations. Like with my mother. I want to listen and be interested by often completely lose what the conversation was about when she rambles on and gets way off track. Any help?

Say:
Mom, I’m more linear than you are. I have a tough time following conversations that jump around. It would help me be able to listen to you if I could signal you somehow to tell you that you’re losing me and I need you to stay on track so I can follow you. Are you open to that?
My husband and I have developed this kind of signaling – and as a result, I’m more focused when I speak and more aware when I go off track.
