July 10, 2009Poison Phrase lessons from the Detective Mom

Filed under: Poison Phrase of the Week by merylrunion |

The Detective Mom tells a delightful story about her three-year-old son who didn’t blink when he was hit in the head with a bat of a ball, but cried when he was thrown out at home. It is an fascinating illustration of how different our sensitivities can be.

That’s what makes writing PowerPhrases and Poison Phrases so difficult to pigeon hole. One friend who counsels asks his clients to create  wounded word dictionaries so he can know what words make them go under in reaction. Every list is completely different.

We do what we can to avoid unneccesary reaction. But we still must know that we might get hit by a bat or a ball or thrown out at home plate despite our best efforts. Life is too predictable to create absolute rules. That’s why we need to cut ourselves – and others – plenty of slack.
