July 17, 2009PowerPhrase: I need someone to do your job and I’m hoping it will be you
Nancy’s performance had deteriorated to the point where her employer needed to let her go if it didn’t improve. Nancy had a lot of personal issues, and her employer empathized, but he explained the bottom line to her when he told her,
- I need someone to do your job, and I’m hoping it will be you.
It’s naive to think that personal issues won’t ever affect job performance, and smart managers do make occasional allowances. They also let their employees know in clear terms when their jobs are at risk.
My book Perfect Phrases for Managers and Supervisors gives the words for hundreds of conversations managers need to have.
