August 12, 2009This Week: Slow down to the speed of love
A friend recently presented a class titled “Slow down to the speed of love.” I didn’t attend because I would have had to rush to make it…but I love the wisdom in the title.
In our busy-ness we often miss the tender moments that happen continually. Many of my friends are committing to scaling back enough to be able to enjoy what they have. My last newsletter spoke of how we can turn work into play and how we need to avoid turning play into work. Slowing down is one real key.
And when you slow down, you just might find the perfect words come naturally to you. I might become obsolete.
But I’m not obsolete yet! A school district placed a bulk order of SpeakStrong for a study group. I am pleased to see that book find its legs. The skills provide a foundation for graceful living.

I definitely see the wisdom in slowing things down. Earlier this week my husband and I took our kids on a camping trip. The preparation was hectic. What to pack? What food to bring? How to schedule it around a kid’s soccer tournament? Did we remember the matches for the campfire? Where’s batteries for the flashlight? Ooops – where’s a hammer for when we need to hammer in the tent stakes? Quick – we’d better race to the campsite so we can get the tent set up before dark!!!
It was supposed to be a good family bonding experience, but at least at the start I had too much adrenaline going to really appreciate the vacation.
Then my son noticed a flier on the shower house wall mentioning an ongoing meteor shower that would be visible for several days. The idea captivated us all, so we removed the tarp that covers our tent. Even the three-year old was content to just lay down on his back in the tent, gazing up through the mosquito netting at the show above. For a couple of hours until people starting drifting off, we just watched the sky and talked.
THAT was when the camping trip stopped racing by and actually became enjoyable.
