My generation was a bit more thick-skinned and tolerated a little straight-forward communication better than those younger than us. I've been accuse of not communicating in a gentle manner and "being mean" becausee I don't use all the soft terms so popular in today's speech. I speak plainly and try not to sound gruff or pointed but people, including my lady friend, notice I didn't use "significant other", a term I find that uses words with ambiguous meaning, say I'm too pointed.
