December 5, 2009Poison Phrase: You don’t look old
Bob commented that many of his client’s parents are younger than he is. His client asked his age and he told her, she exclaimed,
- OMG… you don’t LOOK old.
A tip for the youngsters – most people I know in their 50′s and 60′s don’t think they’re old.
Of course it’s a matter of perspective.

It works both ways. Last night my husband and I were at a Christmas party at the law firm where he’s a partner. He looks younger than he is and, in typical fashion, when he was introduced to influential people he got the familiar comment, “You don’t look old enough to be a partner.” I’m sure it was intended to be harmless or even flattering, but it leaves him with the feeling that people don’t take him seriously because he doesn’t look like a “mature” attorney.

I agree Kris, my guy happens to look extremely young and is constantly receiving remarks in his work environment when people first meet him. He feels like he has to prove himself as a professional even more simply from his youthful appearance.

It’s the flip side. I address that in the article You Don’t Call Me “Old” and I Don’t Call you “Kid” It’s all perspective.
