April 3, 2010@dmscott “By not teaching modern methods to marketing, communications, and journalism students, professors are guilty of malpractice”
Social media expert David M Scott anticipates professors and universities will face malpractice lawsuits for failing to teach students modern methods of reaching buyers. He recommends his book, The New Rules of PR as a text for university, communications and journalism classes. His words are strong for a reason. He speaks to hundreds of students regularly who wonder if they invested in outmoded educations.
I concur and add my own recommendation. My books PowerPhrases and SpeakStrong are also used as texts in school systems, universities and English as a Second Language classes. I don’t know if my Perfect Phrases for Managers and Supervisors is or not – but it should be.
I grew up in academia and worked hard to ground my education in real-world savvy – including how to speak simply and clearly. As wonderful as my Vanderbilt education was, I didn’t learn about good communication there. I learned about it on my own.
And continue to learn. I recently updated my manager phrase book and revised more than I imagined I would – and more than my McGraw Hill contract called for. That’s because women, Gen Y, social media and globalization really are changing the way we relate, influence and succeed.
What got us to the top yesterday will hold us back today. Or, even set us up for a malpractice lawsuit…
Get Scott’s book and get mine too.
