April 7, 2010True gold in modern society: trust and “authentority.”

Filed under: New Dynamics by merylrunion |

According to Craig Newmark, Social networks are beginning to shake up the balance of modern society, with power and influence “increasingly stemming less from wealth and rank than from reputation and perceived trustworthiness.” He calls it “trust funds.”

That trust truly is gold. I call it authentority. We build it when we are genuine and deplete it when we misrepresent. I thought about that when an interviewer asked me about how my life is different since I’ve mastered communication. I used to use the word mastery, but I don’t any more. No one masters communication. But I can teach some great skills, and my life is way more satisfying since I’ve learned them.

Newmark says “Peer networks will confer legitimacy on people emerging from the grassroots.”

Peer networks tend to separate those who have authentority from those who don’t.

  1. It seems that those with authority are clearly able to manipulate consumers and action in our society. It is a very interesting concept!

  2. In this case, I think he’s saying that there’s a growing trend away from manipulation and toward people who have proven right over time.

I read a comment about how it used to be true that an unhappy customer told nine other people. Now, with social networking, that number is exponentially increased. It pay to play fair these days.

We’re too transparent to get away with things anymore.
