May 3, 2010Semantics, PowerPhrase: Boy who is “too old for hugs” is willing to “tackle gently.”
One of my favorite posts is about how our words fit into the self-image of our listener. You can read it here. HBR post nails the need to consider image in choosing words and Speaking Strong
We need to frame requests so our listeners feel good about assenting.
In the Detective Mom’s case, it was the person asked who reframed the request. Her youngest son declined a hug request, but then said he was willing to tackle her. The tackle was identical to their former hugs. As she said, it’s in the semantics. He may have grown too old to hug, but has not grown not too old to gently tackle his big sis.
