June 23, 2010Power Phrase: You’re missing an opportunity here

Filed under: The PowerPhrase of the Week by merylrunion |

A person I met at a party told me she had a writing group that had a brilliant and gracious leader. One way she helped people improve their writing was to say,

  • You’re missing an opportunity here.

I loved that phrase and used it with a friend who regularly complained about what wasn’t working in his business, but declined my offer to brainstorm ideas. So I resubmitted the offer by telling him that I believed he was missing an opportunity.

Well… he invited me to share my ideas for him. Unfortunately he had far more invested in telling me why my ideas wouldn’t work before I could even explain them than he did in solving his problem. I did quit trying – ultimately it is his choice to make. But I felt that I had done my part by framing my desire that he not miss any opportunities in the best way possible.
