  • Imus’s racial/sexist slur
  • Fake smiles
  • What the movie “The Secret” ignores
  • Criminal blogging
  • Talking to your doctor
  • Employees with lousy attitudes
  • Manager that don’t listen
  • Not getting credit for ideas
  • Body odor
  • Performance reviews
  • Perfume overload
  • Dixie Chicks firestorm
  • Denial about illness
  • Kids with attitudes
  • Speech addictions
  • Hugs
  • Incest
  • Families and the holidays
  • Asking for a raise
  • “Whatever”
  • Personalizing feedback
  • Unspecific criticism
  • Turning down dates
  • Responding to religious zealots
  • Money
  • Bully boss
  • False accusations
  • …much, much more.

If you have an issue, it’s almost certainly discussed in my newsletter. And, if it’s not, you can write me and it will be.

This is not some boring treatise – you get examples and stories that bring the information alive.

There’s nothing abstract and theoretical about this newsletter. You get practical illustrations of what to do – and what not to do.

  •  Read how Bob got the CEO to give him his full attention.
  •  Read what Meryl suggests to a man whose family argues over who hosts the holiday get-togethers.
  •  Find out how Lucy and Kim ended their business partnership but remained the best of friends.
  •  Learn how Glen got Jody to stop shouting at their coworker

These are just a few of the stories and examples in A PowerPhrase a Week Archives. There are many more such stories to come.

Here’s what you get when you sign up for the newsletter:

With occasional exceptions, my newsletter consists of the sections listed below. Most subscribers read the whole thing, but some scan their favorite sections.

  • This Week in the World – This section speaks of communication brilliance and errors in our shared world. I provide my unique perspective on words that work and words that backfire – words that are persuasive and words that are manipulative – in the media and in life. It’s often edgy, occasionally political, and always insightful.
  • The PowerPhrase of the Week – Learn phrases others have used that you can use too. This short segment provides a quick illustration of what a PowerPhrase is. The showcased Power Phrases apply to personal, professional and political situations. From how to correct the record when a detractor smears you to how to let someone know their breath needs attention, the phrases are practical and powerful.
  • The Poison Phrase of the Week – This is possibly the most popular section in the newsletter – mostly for its entertainment value. It’s certainly one of my favorites! Discover words that can land you in hot water and have the opposite effect from the one you intend. Sometimes you will see yourself in the examples, other times you will marvel that people can be so clueless as to say these things. They are, and they do.
  • Ask Meryl – Get solutions to the most vexing communication problems at work and at home. In this section, I respond to reader questions about their communication challenges. Find out how I recommend people deal with their issues – and then read my blog for input from readers.
  • Success Stories –See PowerPhrases in action. Readers send in their success stories (in exchange for an I Said It Strong Award.) No – I don’t make this stuff up. People use Power Phrases, they work and it changes their lives.
  • Meryl's Blog – When you want to go deeper and learn more, my blog features lively discussions on a variety of topics. People don’t always agree with what I have to say. When they do, it’s helpful to read why. When they don’t, it’s also helpful to hear them comment on what I might have missed. (Of course, there are also times when I think I gave a brilliant response and a blogger doesn’t agree.)
  • SpeakStrong Telephone Seminars - I travel the country giving talks and seminars on the SpeakStrong techniques for powerful commmunication. I was recently given the idea of providing the same service to my clients over the comfort of their own phones! My newsletter is where I announce my upcoming TeleSeminars, an inexpensive and convienient way to hear my message on a variety of topics, with every opportunity to have your questions answered directly.
